IMPORTANT FOODS AND SUPPLEMENTS AS WE AGE

November 11, 2021 by Chip Sigmon

Let me continue my series of posts concerning important foods and supplements as we age to help support our immune system with a Macronutrient that is not talked about that much in helping our bodies fight off illnesses, and that’s Protein!

Take a look at the picture I have included and look at the Ready To Drink (RTD) and notice what it says in blue, “with nutrients for Immune Health Support”. That’s the first time I have Ever seen that on a label containing Protein!

Protein contains Amino Acids that help give our Immune system a strong foundation when the body has to fight off infections, and if and when we do get sick protein helps us recover.
Protein also helps the body recover from injury or even when one has surgery. I had a dear friend of mine tell me this week that the doctor recommenced her husband eat more protein after he received 2nd degree burns on his foot! Smart Doctor.

Also as we age, we get more tired and run down correct? Well, more Protein to the rescue!
Not every night but when I’ve had a long day, I’ll have a Protein shake right before bed using Casein protein. Casein is a slow digesting Protein so that during the night your body uses the amino acids to help rebuild and replenish. Also with Casein, you’re not going to get that Insulin spike you’ll get with junk food right before bed and that’s simply the worst thing one can do!

I do believe always in food first so let me list some my favorite foods which are good sources of Proteins:
Fish- salmon
Chicken Breast
Top Sirloin (one of the leanest of all red meats)
Whole eggs
Some Yogurts- (watch the sugar content)
Pumpkin seeds which are also good for a healthy Prostate.

I also like at Least 30 grams of protein with each meal. Remember as we age our bodies need more protein not less! As we age our bodies just are not as efficient in breaking it down and using it.
I like one gram of protein per pound of body weight if you’re active. I take in between 165 and 200 grams each day. And No....too much protein does not damage kidneys and have a negative impact on bone density in women!

Again... do the research.
I apologize for this being way too long -I and could have tripled the content.
